Smokery and Seafood Restaurant
The Smokery of Åstol started in 1984 as a co-operation between six families who lived on the island of Åstol among them Björn and Lisbeth Edlund. In 1994, Björn and his wife took over the smokery and started the restaurant “Åstols Rökeri” with its popular music evenings. Björn, being a professional photographer, has decorated the restaurant with beautiful pictures. In one of its two rooms, you can find colour photos of the different artists who have performed in the restaurant over the years. You can also see a number of motives from the sea and the surroundings with the wonderful light that caracterize Björn Edlund’s photography. In the other room, the photographs are in black and white and show ancient life and more recent motives from the island and its rich history as a fishing community. Since 2003, Björn and Lisbeths daughter Pia and her husband Leif Edlund Johansson, who are both professional actors, run the restaurant. They smoke the delicious shrimps and invite musicians, actors and writers to come and perform in the restaurant. They also arrange guided tours on the sea in a boat of Italian design “Delfinen” (the Dolphin). Depending on the weather conditions, you can choose a trip to the Nordic Museum of Water Colour Painting in Skärhamn, passing from rougher to the calmer seas around the archipelago of Jungfru ränna. Or go west towards the horizon and the famous lighthouse Pater Noster, ten kilometres out in the open sea. On board, you are served a glass of champagne or an ice cold beer together with smoked shrimps and can listen to anecdotes and learn about the area. We offer tourguiding in Swedish, English and French. The big, white building which nowadays hosts the Smokery and the Restaurant is a former ice house and offers a magnificent view over the harbour. Throughout the years, “Åstols Rökeri” has become one of the most popular and well visited places along the westcoast.
“Åstols Rökeri” is open for booking all year round. The Restaurant traditionally opens for the season in time for the Easter holidays. From then, the Restaurant is open every weekend, Friday to Sunday, until midsummer. For knowing the exact opening hours in spring, please call us they depend on the weather! From Midsummers day, the 23th of June until the 19th of August, it is open every day 12.00 24.00 In autumn, we arrange a Lobster-evening to celebrate the Black Gold captures of the sea! We also arrange “Julbord” the Swedish Christmas smorgasbord in December.
